little women is a 1968/1969 novel by US author louisa may alcott, that follows the lives of the four march sisters as they grow up in massachussetts during the united states civil war. beautiful meg, tomboy jo, shy beth and spoiled amy are left with their mother marmee as their father goes off to help the army. formerly a wealthy family, they now struggle to make ends meet in trying times. but even through hardships, the girls grow up and learn to overcome their flaws, blossoming into fine ladies with the guidance of their mother, and other relatives and friends like their neighbor laurie, his grandfather mr. lawrence, laurie's tutor mr. brooke, their rich aunt march, the wise professor bhaer and others.

the novel was originally published in two parts, the second half known as good wives. the two started being published together in 1880. alcott also wrote two sequels: little men, which follows the lives of the sisters and their children, and especially jo and fritz bhaer as they run a school for young children at aunt march's old plumfield estate; and jo's boys and how they turned out, which further delves into the lives of jo's students from little men as they become young adults.

louisa may alcott was born in 1832 in germantown, pennsylvania, to abigail may and amos bronson alcott. she's mostly known for her little women trilogy, but wrote many other novels for children and young adults, mostly based on herself and her experiences both in growing up with her family and within the context of the civil war. she was an abolitionist and a feminist. she died in 1888 from after-effects of mercury poisoning, which she contracted during a period when she served as a nurse to wounded soldiers at union hospital in D.C.
