about;

shin seiki evangelion (or neon genesis evangelion, as it's known outside japan) is a media franchise that started in 1995, with the release of an anime series of the same name, produced by studio GAINAX and directed by anno hideaki, with character designs by sadamoto yoshiyuki. the series revolves around ikari shinji, a 14-year-old boy who gets called by his absentee father to pilot a giant biorobot known as an evangelion, using it to fight against a series of alien-like beings named angels. if these creatures get their way, it could mean the destruction of all life on earth-- the fate of the world is put, quite literally, on shinji's hands.

however, this series is so much more complex than this simple summary makes it sound. hailed by critics as one of the best anime ever made (if not the best), evangelion is more than just your average mecha anime: it is a complete deconstruction of the human condition. it manages to introduce characters that every person can relate to in some sense, and then carefully picks their psyche apart in a way that leaves them completely open to us, all the while weaving them into a plot filled with sci-fi elements, political intrigue, amazing action scenes colored with deep religious undertones and even some good old turn-your-stomach gore for those who like that.

EVA revolutionized the animanga world. from its initial 26-episode run, which was sadly affected by budget cuts during production, it grew into such a massive phenomena that it became a symbol of animanga culture all over the world. the original episodes were followed by two movies: death & rebirth and the end of evangelion. these movies, comprising both a recap of the original series and a very shocking alternate ending expanding upon the last two original episodes, caused even more of an uproar surrounding the franchise. by now, the characters have icons of the otaku subculture, for many people household names.

in 2006, more than a decade after NGE first aired on japanese TV, GAINAX released a statement letting the world know that anno and his team were working on a remake/re-imagining of the original series, a tetralogy of movies to be titled evangelion shin gekijouban or, as they're known in english, rebuild of evangelion. this movie series would feature completely new animation, with the latest in special effects, new scenes, new backgrounds, new characters, and a different take on the plot itself. it also promised to be a more understandable re-take of the series, so that it was more accessible to new audiences that were not necessarily fans of the original.

the first movie, jou-- also known as 1.0: you are (not) alone-- debuted in fall 2007 and comprised a retelling of the first 6 episodes of the series. the second movie, ha-- aka 2.0: you can (not) advance-- opened in summer 2009 and comprised what is known as the "action" arc, but with significant changes, including new and important deviations from the original plot and even a completely original character. these two movies were received positively by japanese audiences, both reaching the #1 spot in charts and even breaking box-office records. 1.0 has also generated a lot of excitement with its US release via FUNimation. the last two movies, kyuu (or Q) and "final," are scheduled to be released side-by-side in the near-future.

a fanlisting is, as described by its creator, janine, as a "a place for all fans of a particular show, movie, actor/actress, singer, etc. to come together and build the biggest listing of people from all around the world who are fans of that subject." in this case, it's a list of fans of the rebuild of evangelion movies.
